OUR STORY

Two Sisters, One Vision: Restoring and Preserving Nature through Land Conservation and Mitigation Banking.

In 2021, sisters Laurie Morris Smith and Tina Morris Thomson embarked on an inspiring journey. United by a deep commitment to preserve their family land and a shared vision of environmental stewardship, they made a long-term commitment to land conservation, aiming to protect the earth, wildlife, and our natural environment. Driven by a passion for sustainability and biodiversity, their mission is to raise awareness and educate others on the importance of safeguarding Mother Earth for generations to come.

Today, Tina and Laurie co-own and manage 500 acres of land in Fillmore, California, a property that has been in their family for nearly 40 years. After their parents passed, they purchased the land from other family members and are now working toward qualifying it as a Mitigation Bank, which they have named Rancho Dos Hermanas (R2H).

As fifth-generation Californians, Laurie and Tina share deep roots in Ventura County. They were raised in Fillmore, where their family heritage stretches back on both sides. Their father was a member of the William L. Morris family, who settled in Fillmore in the late 1920s, and their mother descended from the McGrath clan, Irish immigrants who settled in Ventura County in 1876. Growing up within a legacy of farmers and landowners, the sisters were instilled with a strong sense of responsibility for the land and a deep appreciation for natural resources. Now, they are committed to continuing this legacy, promoting environmental stewardship that honors both their family’s heritage and the land itself.

Rancho Dos Hermanas (R2H) exemplifies the importance of land preservation and environmental conservation to support biodiversity. R2H also serves as an educational resource for local students and community members, offering tours and learning opportunities from experts in environmental sustainability and land conservation.

“Our goal is to set an example, inspiring others to appreciate the wealth of nature in their own backyards while raising awareness about the critical importance of land preservation and biodiversity for future generations,” say Laurie Morris Smith and Tina Morris Thomson.
